Hello, I'd like to add to this discussion that there is also a minor but somewhat annoying display bug in XP's image preview functionality, the Picture and Fax Viewer.
I don't know where else to post this report, so please forgive me if I'm at the wrong place. When you double-click on an image file to see a preview of it and the image is small enough to fit on the screen pixel-by-pixel, a vertical line of pixels in the center of the image is not shown.
This happens regardless of the image file format. This image contains one-pixel wide gray vertical lines spaced one pixel apart. This is the result of one of the white lines in between the gray lines being skipped. All other parts of the image are drawn correctly in a pixel-exact fashion. Interestingly, this does NOT occur after browsing forward through a number of pictures.
If you save linetest. It does occur, though, if you browse backwards. To my knowledge, this artifact has not been corrected in any service pack or update so far. Download ToolTipFix. Then repeat the process to fix the problem. There is another small thing you need to do which is open an Explorer window such as My Computer and then click on sort by name in the Start menu. This then brought the tooltip to the front using the extra step.
There are other possible solutions around such as killing the Explorer process, logging off or restarting which is actually what Microsoft rather unhelpfully recommended in their knowledge base article in , but these really seem a bit overkill to try and cure such a simple problem. Although you can obviously try them out if non of the above solutions worked for you.
Thank you so much that was so annoying I changed my screen resolution and adjusted a few things and lost my tool tips. Thank you so much for bringing this little fix to my attention.
The gradient effect is possible only if the system has a color depth of more than colors. Hot-tracking means that when the cursor moves over an item, it is highlighted but not selected.
This master switch must be on for any menu animation to occur. The selection fade effect is possible only if the system has a color depth of more than colors. The tooltip fade effect is possible only if the system has a color depth of more than colors. For more information on the slide and fade effects, see the AnimateWindow function.
The following are the window parameters. The pvParam parameter must point to an integer variable that receives this value. Set pvParam to the number of milliseconds to delay before activating the window under the mouse pointer. Set pvParam to the desired width, in pixels. The default and minimum value is 1. Set uiParam to the new value. Set pvParam to the number of times to flash. Set pvParam to the new timeout value. The following parameters are specific to Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me.
Set the uiParam parameter to 1. The pvParam parameter is not used. For more information about system-wide parameters, see the uiAction parameter. If not otherwise indicated, you must specify zero for this parameter. If not otherwise indicated, you must specify NULL for this parameter.
Return Values If the function succeeds, the return value is a nonzero value. If the function fails, the return value is zero. To get extended error information, call GetLastError. Remarks This function is intended for use with applications that allow the user to customize the environment.
A keyboard layout name should be derived from the hexadecimal value of the language identifier corresponding to the layout. For example, U. English has a language identifier of 0x, so the primary U. English layout is named " English layout, such as the Dvorak layout, are named "," "" and so on. Thus, it will appear to an application that the primary button is still down.
Header: Declared in Winuser. Library: Use User Also supported by Microsoft Layer for Unicode. I'm writing this so when people search they don't waste time attempting this. First, let me point out again that I'm not a programmer so the somewhat disparaging tone is out of place. Third, what does it matter if "all I've done If the hack works, does it matter where it is?
Or did you just poo-poo it because "it shouldn't work"? I'm not a code jockey, so if it does work, great. If not, oh well - it's not as bad as some suggestions I've seen. But really - wouldn't some hard empirical data be more useful to the the Reading Masses? It's been a week, lots of reboots as I do some long-overdue maintenance and upgrades and 1 system state restore and so far, so good.
I'd be interested in some results if anyone tries this. You might be interested in finding out whether his results can be replicated. Tool Tip Manager specifically fixes this problem by looking at various taskbar window messages and resetting the tooltip's "topmost" window style automatically as needed. Regards, Nick Acquaviva.

Simply give tooltip windows Z-order priority over ALL other windows! Micky wrote:. Wesley Vogel.
Wes: I used to see this problem from day 1 with XP. Out of the blue my computer does not have this problem. Who said miracles never happen? Don't know what happened but she doth worketh fine. Heck of a deal, Doug. It fixed itself by clicking an other window, but reappeared by clicking the taskbar again. I have been searching for a solution for quite some time, thanks a lot!
I just had this problem again, and tried going to programs, right-clicking to bring up menu, then clicking on desktop to get out of start menu. I did that twice, without sorting, and it worked! In case you have it sorted by another method, like by the order installed, this could save you some hassle. Neither other fixes suggested.
Probably the new updates from Microsoft breaks this possibility. Thanks to Keep It Simple Sweety, response 31! This was the first fix that I found works on this list, minus downloading a prgram. MS has too many little problems to fix them all that way! Have fun with that. Sarao I agree, the fewer background programs running, the better.
Thanks for the pointer to tskill. Thanks, chaos There is simple autohotkey script, that solves the problem. Then it ensures the tooltip has always-on-top flag, and waits again. Amidst a tangled web.
