You folks nailed this one! I've been receiving these docs from my clieht for years, and she told me she had WordPerfect so I never doubted her. I could never open them right from the email message, so I just saved them, went to Word now ver. I definitely don't have Works on my other PC so must have loaded a converter at one time without knowing it. I'm not about to invest in Works -- it's not worth much, in my humble opinion. So I'll have to work around it. I'll send the docs from this laptop to my PC, convert them to Word and send them back to the laptop and hope it works.
